Description
This stone Lantern, Oribe-doro, made of Taiko stone and it was hand-carved by a craftsman. It has been a long time since this lantern was made. but it has not been owned by anyone and is not a used item.

Japanese stone lantern, Toro (Doro)
Japanese traditional outdoor lighting equipment made of stone. Originally used for lanterns in shrines and temples, it has also been used for ornamental purposes in tea gardens and general gardens since the Momoyama period (1573-1603).

Oribe-doro (Oribe type)
The lantern has no foundation, and the post is embedded directly in the ground. It features a rounded design at the top of the post. It is called Oribe doro because it is said that Oribe Furuta, who was a daimyo (feudal lord) and a master of tea, devised and liked it. Since the shape of the pillar is the image of the cross and the figure is the image of the Virgin, it is also known as the Christian lantern.

Taiko stone
It is a granite that was quarried in Kyoto during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. It is now very rare and has been favored by the people such as tea masters and scholars because the weathering is beautiful.
